Men have ample opportunity to improve the quality of their sperm, and, thereby, to increase the likelihood of a pregnancy. Male fertility problems are the cause of 40% of fertility problems in infertile couples. Men should therefore keep these ten tips in mind:

  1. Avoid alcohol: Even small amounts of alcohol reduce sperm count in men.
  2. Smoking: Quit! Nicotine is not only damaging to blood vessels, but also to your wallet. Smoking reduces sperm count and their motility.
  3. Don’t take drugs: Even small amounts of drugs like cannabis damage sperm. So, if you want to be a father, keep your hands off drugs.
  4. Environmental pollutants: pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, and chemicals damage DNA. Stay away!
  5. Relax and avoid stress: Feeling tired and stressed out from work will make you lose interest in sex. That doesn’t mean you should quit your job just yet. But perhaps you can adopt a more relaxed attitude.
  6. Sex in the morning: The best time for sexual intercourse is the morning. Studies have shown that sperm count is greater in the morning than in the evening.
  7. Diet and dieting: If you are trying to lose weight, don’t go to extremes. Cutting simple carbohydrates, white flour, and sugar from your diet is fine. However, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and trace elements are key to sperm development.
  8. Bicycle riding: Choose another sport. Sitting on a bicycle seat leads to elevated temperatures and increased pressure on the sensitive parts of the male anatomy. Exercise is a good thing — but bike riding is not the best choice when you and your partner want to get pregnant.
  9. Mobile phones: It is ok to use the phone. But don’t put your phone into your pants’ pocket. A Hungarian study has shown that men who put their phones in their pants’ pocket while the devices are powered on, evidence significantly less sperm in their ejaculate.
  10. Complement your diet with the most important trace elements, amino acids, and antioxidants. How these can effectively improve a spermiogram is detailed here.
